Alex Kane looked out of his hotel room window and saw the statue of William Penn standing over City Hall. For decades the statue had been a reminder to all that this huge metropolis had been founded on the best instincts of the colonial forebears.

This, the City of Brotherly Love, was founded as a refuge from the prejudice and intolerance of another, older country. Here, in this very city, the settlers decided that even the most tenuous ties with the Motherland were too much for a free people to stand. It was only a few blocks on the other side of City Hall that the Declaration of Independence had been signed.

“I want to go there.”

“What?” Danny asked from the other side of the room. He was actually pleased that Alex had said anything. The idea that the Amtrak bombing had happened so very close to their hotel had made his lover’s sense of impotence all the more enraging. They had actually heard the blast. They, too, had seen the television broadcast that described the non-gay dead and wounded as people caught by a battle in which the gays were presented as active participants.

There had been a flurry of late night phone calls to Farmdale’s home in California. The computers had been run and emergency conferences had been held over the long distance wire. But there was nothing to be learned from the content of the phone calls that had been made to the Philadelphia authorities and media.

Farmdale had been even more anxious than usual. His original thought that the airways were the prime target were evidently incorrect, though the basic assumption still held: The vulnerability of the country’s transportation system was still the target. Train stations made even easier marks. They didn’t have the security checks that airports did. They simply allowed people to board and go on their way to their destination. Now the question was: Would the terrorists go after any other part of the transportation network that held the country together?

The mayor and the governor were caught in a bind. They couldn’t shut down the railroads and airports that held the region together. But neither could they deny the possibility of massive destruction and loss of human life.

Some group out there, in this city built on the principles of peace and liberty, was trying to murder its gay population. They had to find out who those idiots were. They were going to have to answer to Alex Kane for a lot – a whole lot.

Alex had been silent all day after a fitful night’s sleep following those conversations. They knew nothing more now. But at least he was willing to talk and he wanted to go out. That was fine by Danny. It seemed to be an awfully good sign, in fact.

The harsh reality of the situation couldn’t be avoided, though. Danny watched while Alex got a leather satchel that he strapped around his shoulder. It looked something like an elegant man’s bag, the type of thing that so many men in New York were using these days.
